Sea-Life Ltd. (the hazards of freelancing)

I was contacted Thursday afternoon by a representative of  major apparel licensing company  for a rush job over the weekend.  I was to complete two designs at $225 per design.

"This is the board we created for this account and they need 2 more. Screen
with applique. Only thing is they do not want numbers because we keep
running in to legal issues. So maybe a number letter number,. Ie 4R5, or
other collegiate icons. Young mens. Maps are big so maybe a state in solid
vector in the background, possible mascot but not too young. I need 2
designs by Monday. $225 per. Please let me know if you can bang this out.
Thanks"

I did not ask for any money up front because I am interested in working for this company on other projects in the future and I thought that it would encourage the company to pursue future contracts with me. They were rejected this afternoon when my contact with the company emailed an apology and informed me that they would be completing the designs in-house.  I would include an image of the product line that I was approached about completing, but I'm not sure about the legality of doing so, also I would prefer to only feature my work on this blog.  Both designs were meant to be printed on either light gray or light blue t-shirts.  Basically the assignment was to create faux collegiate athletic t shirts for young men apparel. The examples that were sent to me were the usual generic distressed t-shirts that are found in malls at stores like American Eagle et. al.

These are the two designs that I submitted this morning.

After sending these two designs I received this email...

I don’t mind that you use california, but then make the other east coast. With california, I don’t like the black silouette. I think there are too many colors and would like it to be on a color ground. A more collegiate font and the icon looks too clip art. Please rework Nevada."

I reworked the design for Nevada a bit and changed the name of the state on the t-shirt. I sent the new North Carlolina (X Nevada) design in while I was working on completing the California design per my contact's notes.
Here is my "reworked" Nevada tee

However, I almost immediately received this email from the company representative while I worked on the California design.

"I really apologize . This is not headed in the right direction. We will rush to do this internally. I will keep you in mind for future projects. Thank you for your time and effort.. "

I replied with a staid email expressing interest in working with them in the future and a request for a link to their product catalog so that I might familiarize myself with the design aesthetic of their company. As of the time of this posting I have received no response, but it has only been three hours. I am optimistic about my chances of working for the company again.

Readers: I am interested in your opinions, not only of the work (which is admittedly not close to my normal projects in style) but also your opinions on how to avoid these sort of situations in the future.
